Framed: 84cm x 66cm x 5.5cm

Koi fish with a difference was my inspiration for this luminescent oil on canvas.

The fishes are three-dimensional, created with thick palette knife strokes in oil paint - making them stand out against the heavily textured background of waves and light.

‘Rising Tides’ is framed in a beautiful brushed European gold leaf frame & mounted on glossy black acrylic panel to pop all the luminescent colours – creating an incredibly elegant Feng Shui piece that will bring auspicious luck to any corporate space or home.

I have a little garden inside me,
A secret little garden,
Where fairies and goblins dwell,
And the birds and the bees swell;
The secret garden blooms and blooms,
Every morning - revealing new miracles,
A little girl plays,
As she dances and twirls,
Sprinkling gold dust and shimmer,
Telling me to
Live, dance, eat, pray and love,
May the long time sun shine upon you,
May you find your secret garden of magical power one day.

SOLD - 'Tropical Awakening'

Growing up in Malaysia, my world has always been brimming with vivid colours. Colour is something that I am extremely fond of and is an essential part of my life and who I am as a person.

The particular shade of Pink I’ve used in ‘Tropical Awakening’ reminds me of my favourite childhood drink, “Sirap Bandung” - a delicious heady mix of rose Syrup, ice and milk... a refreshing respite on a hot sunny afternoon.

This very inspiration carried through into the subject and creation, as I wanted the painting to exude a sense of the cool refreshing respite of shade created by the beautiful majestic palm leaves on a hot and humid afternoon.

I have also hidden messages and words of loving empowerment in the painting because I believe in the power of the subconscious mind. It is where beliefs, memories and untapped power are stored.

“You don’t become what you want, you become what you believe.”

SOLD - 'Pineapple Tart'

Inspired by the memories of one of my favourite highlights of Chinese New Year at home in Malaysia - the buttery aroma & crumbly texture of this pastry cookie with the soft, gooey sweet &  slight tart pineapple filling.

When I close my eyes and imagine myself popping one of these tarts into my mouth - the explosion of colours and flavours and textural sensation is what I see.

Be prepared to be surprised and delighted by the little hidden surprises of ladybirds and bees as well as the layers of textures created by the leaves’ imprints on this unique painting.

A mix of glossy and matt textures, pastel and fluorescent colours - this piece of artwork is an instant eye catcher and brings the feel-good factor into any space.

FUN FACT: Back in the day in Europe, pineapples were considered a luxury item, reserved for the few who could afford the labour of love, as it took a lot of effort and skill to grow pineapples in this climate.

‘Courage’ is the latest series of paintings from my Botanicals Collection. Instead of trying to recreate nature with my brush and palette knife, I decided to incorporate the lush nature from my childhood into my paintings.

My mum is an avid gardener and I always grew up surrounded by plants, flowers and fruits trees of all sorts – papaya, mango, guava etc. Mum was really into her Orchids at one point in time and me, as a child, never understood the attraction at that time. In particular, she had a great fondness for these yellow dancer orchids that she grew many of.

Funny how now, in my mature life, I look at the Orchid with a whole different set of view. I see the Orchid as a majestic yet simple, elegant and somewhat sensual flower. Yellow is one of my mum’s favourite colours to wear when I was younger.

ketupat and sirap bandung, Mishell Leong Art

SOLD - 'Ketupat and Sirap Bandung'

Acrylic on Linen

2018

36” x 30” (92cm x 76cm)

Literally inspired by my neighbour’s house where I grew up in Subang Jaya.

I close my eyes and see and smell the festivities of Hari Raya (Eid) when I was growing up. The splash of pink represents my favourite drink, Sirap Bandung; the splash of gold – the Satay sauce that I used to heap ladles full of onto anything and everything on my plate at the Hari Raya open house events I went to eagerly as a child.

These are one of my precious memories of home.

SOLD - 'Stronger than You Think'

Acrylic on Linen,

2018

32” x 16” (81 x 41cm)

True story: Although this painting was actually created in 2018, I lacked the confidence to be proud of it until a year later – when I finally gathered enough courage to have it photographed.

In reflection, I realised how we often tell ourselves stories that do not serve us at all – how “we are not good enough”… “we are not enough”. I have also learned that it is possible for us to create a new subconscious by changing the stories that we tell ourselves.

In this painting, I have infused words of love and encouragement to give one the courage and confidence to break through that barrier, into the light.

SOLD - 'Awful Cats'

Mixed Media on Linen

‘Courage’ is the latest series of paintings from my Botanicals Collection. Instead of trying to recreate nature with my brush and palette knife, I decided to incorporate the lush nature from my childhood into my paintings.

By incorporating real leaves and flowers, the authentic and beautiful essence of Mother Nature transcends onto the canvas. Seeing the intensity of the results from each intricate and individual leaf and flower pattern was empowering; every crease and angle is captured in way a brush could never express so acutely.

It was exhilarating to witness the transformational effect from each layer of rich jungle, exuding the magical feel of multi-dimensional garden on canvas.

In a world that often feels so detached and artificial, it was energising to bring the raw beauty of natural foliage into the artworks. The cats are my homage to my eighteen cats that I had at one point in my childhood.

SOLD - 'That Corner House'

Acrylic on Linen

2018

36” x 30” (92cm x 76cm)

I grew up in a humble, double storey terraced house and I would walk by this corner house everyday on my way to and back from school.

The house’s wall had this particular coral shade of paint but unfortunately due to the constant battering of sunshine and rain, the paint started to peel off the sides and top of the wall.

I used to catch tadpoles and play on the seesaw just next to this house. These are one of my precious memories of home.

SOLD - 'Palm Springs'

Acrylic and Gold Leaf on Linen

2018

36” x 36” (92cm x 92cm)

Inspired by the house with the massive Bougainvillea tree just across my Secondary School in Subang Jaya.

I have snippets of memories from my childhood of this tree and its magnificient hues of pink, magenta and white. The house was painted coral and this tree with its bountiful blooms stooped almost over their front gate.

Childhood memories are so powerful this way. I am so grateful for them.

The beautiful oak frame with teal linen inlay just beautifully brings out the grains of the leaves and pops the colours.

the path, mishell leong art

SOLD - 'The Path'

Acrylic on Linen

2018

53” x 33.5” (135cm x 85cm)

This painting was inspired by my daily walks to and home from both my primary and secondary schools, both conveniently located within ten minutes from home,

Although the path is technically a straighter path in real life - in my child’s mind, it was twisty and windy, full of little adventures and obstacles, puddles that I had to jump over and the overgrown weeds or bush I had to swerve around.

I also remember how I took my time to study the flowers and insects along the way…often making it in the nick of time to school.

This was the most detailed piece of my 2018 Botanical Art series. There are six bees hidden in this painting.

Inspired by the memories of my childhood days of growing up in Subang Jaya, Malaysia. I was surrounded by lush banana and palm trees.

I loved the smell of the rain and I used to sit by my window staring at the raindrops racing down the windowsill, daydreaming away.

These are my memories of home.

This is one of my “Cat in the Garden” series where I first incorporated real leaves and flowers which really helped bring the cat to life in the painting.

By incorporating real leaves and flowers, the authentic and beautiful essence of Mother Nature transcends onto the canvas. SOLD -  'Come Closer'

‘The Dualism of life’ - this piece of art plays on the subtlety of the middle finger which can be interpreted as a vulgarity OR a beckoning one to come closer to examine the beauty in the details of the art and life. It all depends on how you choose to look at it.

Much like life, we often jump to conclusions on first impressions. Take a closer look and you will see the beauty you have initially missed.

The Hello Kitty is also a play on the over-commercialism of the brand and iconic representation of the cat figure which is, contrary to belief,  a little girl and not a cat.

SOLD -  'Cat-titude'

‘Cat with an Attitude’ – embrace life with the attitude and such force to face it head on. Confront your fears as if there is no other way.

a thousand blooms, mishell leong watercolour art

SOLD - 'A Thousand Blooms'

Watercolour on Paper

2015

This was my first watercolour painting, commissioned for the cover of a friend’s company annual catalogue.

The brief was elegant, opulent, Shanghai Tang – so I decided to go for the Peony and Koi fishes to symbolise prosperity and abundance. Chrysanthemums are believed to represent happiness, love, longevity and joy.

Painting watercolour is something that is especially therapeutic for me, for my soul. I particularly enjoy using cold-pressed textured paper for this type of artwork.

abundance, mishell leong, watercolour

SOLD - 'Abundance'

Watercolour on Paper

2016

Another special commission from an ex-colleague and good friend, I wanted to create a painting that would give her peace and calm yet inspire and energise for her new office.

Peonies are regarded as the “King of Flowers”,  symbolic of riches and honour. With their lush, full, rounded bloom, peonies embody romance and prosperity and are regarded as a symbol of good fortune and a happy marriage.

Koi fishes symbolise good fortune and success whilst butterflies represent freedom and rebirth. The pink lotus flower is seen as meaning purity and devotion. Combined, all elements are meant to bring prosperity, luck and purity – the pillars of abundance in life.

“Not what we have, but what we enjoy, constitutes our Abundance.” – Epicurus.

my mum's garden, mishell leong, watercolour art

SOLD - 'My Mum’s Garden'

Watercolour on Paper

2018

Created out of a whim, I wanted a painting that encapsulates the feeling of joy and homecoming when I think of my home in Malaysia.

The colours, textures and shapes and sizes of all the flora and fauna speak to me more and more as I grow older, living away from home.

Sensual Collection

SOLD - 'Faye Sun - Beauty'

Year: 2017

Oil on Canvas

Dimension: 34” x 40” (86.5cm x 102cm)

This painting is based on the first Asian model who broke into the Italian Vogue market. Her name is Sun Fei Fei. I had a connection to her as I have always struggled with balancing the eastern and western sides of who I am. Her courage to conquer the world of western fashion made her not only beautiful, but strong and determined. To illustrate this, the painting is full of contradictions – almost against the “rules of the artworld” - the bold and expressive palette knife strokes with the fine art brush details; a westernised face with east-Asian elements; and the texture and smoothness.

“Life is full of contrasts. The beauty is in embracing all of it with full courage and confidence."

SOLD - 'Leila - The Awakening'

Year: 2017

Oil on Canvas

Dimension: 26" x 34"

Unleashing my inner goddess, this painting expresses my inner sensual and sexy self; making me wonder what I wanted from life.

“I don’t need permission from anyone anymore. I believe in living life to the fullest, and that means trying every single thing you want to try.”

SOLD - 'Sasha - Contemplation'

Year: 2017

Acylic on Canvas

Dimension: 30" x 30"

This painting is about self-acceptance and the beauty of a bigger picture, told through the story of the flat nose. Sasha came at a tough time in my life, when I was batting with my roots and questions of my perception of myself.

Through Sasha, I found expression in beauty in a different form. She has also taught me to embrace myself for who I am – and find beauty and pride in my flat nose.

SOLD - 'Alesha - Surrender'

This painting is about surrendering - in order to receive. Just because surrendering is soft and feminine, it doesn’t make it weak, it leads to pleasure and ecstasy.

This was inspired when I truly learnt the real meaning and power of femininity. Each one of us has a masculine and feminine within us, which is often suppressed.

Women feel that they have to be resilient, hard and tough to succeed. As a result, we build a wall around ourselves and our hearts and start to feel unhappy without knowing why.

As I slowly learned the beauty of strength through softness, an incredibly powerful source of energy came deep from within. I slowly found that in surrendering to my fears, I gained newfound strengths underneath. I found boundless love and courage.

Framing Description: The Oil on Canvas is Float Mounted onto a Semi-Transparent Black Acrylic Backing with 3” Visible Border all round and 1” Matte Black Aluminum Frame – elegant, modern and contemporary.

“Surrender to set ourselves free.”
